Israel has once again demonstrated blatant disregard for international law by furthering its illegal occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that Israeli forces had seized control of a demilitarized buffer zone, following the retreat of Syrian government forces. This move coincides with the collapse of the Assad regime and the takeover of Damascus by rebel forces.

Netanyahu cited the supposed breakdown of the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria as justification for the military incursion, framing it as a “temporary defensive measure.” However, critics view this as another calculated step by Israel to expand its illegal hold over Syrian territory.

“The collapse of the Assad regime, the tyranny in Damascus, offers great opportunity but also is fraught with significant dangers,” Netanyahu said, portraying Israel’s actions as a protective measure while ignoring the rights of the Syrian people.

Decades of Illegal Occupation

Israel has occupied the Syrian Golan Heights since the Six-Day War in 1967, an act condemned by the international community. In 1981, Israel unilaterally annexed the territory, a move rejected by the United Nations and most countries. Despite this, Israel has continued to expand settlements in the region, displacing Syrians and violating their sovereignty.

The latest incursion has drawn criticism for its brazen violation of international agreements. The buffer zone, established as a neutral area to prevent conflict, is now under Israeli military control. Residents of five Syrian villages in the zone were ordered to remain indoors, highlighting the oppressive nature of Israel’s actions.

Exploiting Syria's Crisis

As Syria grapples with the aftermath of the Assad regime’s collapse, Israel appears to be exploiting the chaos to solidify its grip on the occupied Golan Heights. Netanyahu claimed that Israel seeks “peaceful relations” with new Syrian forces but emphasized that Israel would take any measures to secure its own interests.

For decades, Israel has systematically undermined peace efforts in the region while benefiting from the instability of its neighbors. The annexation of the Golan Heights and the ongoing settlement expansions have been described by human rights groups as part of a broader agenda to entrench its control over occupied territories, disregarding the suffering of displaced populations.

A History of Oppression

The Golan Heights, a fertile and resource-rich area, is home to thousands of Syrians who have lived under Israeli occupation for decades. Many of these residents, primarily Druze communities, face systemic discrimination and limited access to resources while Israeli settlers expand their presence.

Israel’s military actions not only violate Syrian sovereignty but also perpetuate a cycle of instability in the region. By exploiting Syria’s internal strife, Israel continues to position itself as a regional aggressor, prioritizing territorial expansion over genuine peace efforts.

Global Condemnation Needed

Israel’s ongoing actions in the Golan Heights reflect a broader pattern of disregard for international norms. Its occupation of Palestinian territories and frequent military operations in neighboring countries have long been criticized as examples of state-sanctioned aggression.

The international community must hold Israel accountable for its actions in the Golan Heights and beyond. Failing to do so risks emboldening a state that has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to flout international law at the expense of peace and stability in the Middle East.
