Sony has officially announced the launch of its new PlayStation 5 Pro, but the hefty price tag has left many gamers in disbelief. The console, which is being hailed by Sony as the “most advanced and innovative console hardware to date,” will be available in the US for $699.99, in the UK for £699.99, in Europe for €799.99, and in Japan for ¥119,980.
While the PS5 Pro comes equipped with a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller, and a copy of “Astro’s Playroom,” many consumers feel that the cost is unreasonably high. Several British buyers have expressed frustration over the seemingly higher cost in the UK, sparking a wave of complaints across social media.
Users on X (formerly Twitter) have voiced their dissatisfaction, with one commenting, “Of course the Brits have to pay more for it too,” while another called the price “insane.” Some even suggested the announcement could be a hoax, given the sticker shock. “THE $700 PS5 PRO PRICE WAS REAL,” another user wrote in disbelief.
In response to the backlash, Sony has yet to comment publicly on the controversy. However, details released on the PlayStation blog highlight several performance upgrades for the PS5 Pro. According to the company, the console is designed to cater to “deeply engaged players and game creators” who seek higher fidelity graphics and smoother gameplay at 60FPS.
Key features of the PS5 Pro include an upgraded GPU with 67% more Compute Units than the existing PS5 model, 28% faster memory, and advanced ray tracing capabilities for more dynamic reflections and light refractions. The console also introduces “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution,” an AI-driven upscaling technology that aims to deliver ultra-sharp image clarity.
In addition to the hardware improvements, a number of games will feature free software updates to take advantage of the PS5 Pro’s enhanced capabilities. Titles such as “Alan Wake 2,” “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows,” “Demon’s Souls,” and “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth,” among others, will carry the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label.
The PlayStation 5 Pro is set to launch on November 7, with pre-orders beginning on September 26. As gamers debate whether the performance boosts justify the price, Sony continues to promote the PS5 Pro as the next step in console gaming.
