Having raised almost £5.9 million for Children in Need, Paddy McGuinness is about to complete a fantastic 300-mile bicycle trip on behalf of the organisation.
Renowned for his work on Top Gear and Question of Sport, the 51-year-old has completed five days of pedalling from Wrexham to Glasgow on a Chopper bike, a taxing test of physical endurance. McGuinness discussed the emotional and physical toll of the struggle as he approached the finish line.
How Has McGuinness Managed Such a Gruelling Challenge?

Along with getting letters of support from astronaut Tim Peake and Phoenix Nights co-star Peter Kay, he has been joined on his five-day trek by many luminaries, including Olympic cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, who rode beside him on the route. Kay’s tone was incredibly lighthearted: “After crossing that finishing line, grab some good garlic bread. Glasgowrilla should be done this way!
Thanks to a substantial donation from Scottish businessman and philanthropist Sir Tom Hunter, the fundraising total is projected to rise even further. £ He promised to match any Wednesday donations up to £ 3 million.
What Motivates McGuinness to Fundraise for Children in Need?
McGuinness has been candid about the factors driving him to take on such a massive task. “That’s what motivates you when you meet the people whose lives the work sponsored by Children in Need influences,” he said. “People stop me and thank you while you are out and about; you see the good being done in the community. That’s relatively strong.
McGuinness’s raised money will help young people and underprivileged youngsters throughout the U.K. The organisation started in 1980 and has raised more than £1 billion for initiatives to better disadvantaged children and young people.
How Does McGuinness's Challenge Compare to Others?
Like fellow presenter Vernon Kay, who raised almost £5 million for Children in Need last year by running an ultra-marathon, McGuinness is carrying on the legacy. Kayaran 116 miles over four days from Leicester to Bolton, an equally taxing chore that attracted national interest.
McGuinness will learn the ultimate number of his fundraising efforts during this year’s televised appeal, which starts on Friday night, as he reaches the Glasgow finish line.
