There is a noticeable lack of representation. About 25% of college students come from working-class families. But this group only made up 12% of the people who joined Fast Stream in 2024. This kind of difference needs immediate and planned action.

The changes to internships are meant to break down these barriers by making it easier for everyone to get into public service professions. The civil service internships for equal chances program is only for college students in their last two years. It lasts between 6 and 8 weeks and pays. Students learn how to write briefings, follow top officials around, plan events, and undertake research. These jobs are very important for the government to do every day, and they give you a lot of experience.

Interns in the program don’t merely watch; they have genuine responsibilities. By doing meaningful work, individuals can gain the skills and confidence they need to do well in competitive professions. The Labour government has been pushing for change since it took office. The Prime Minister warned in December that “too many people in Whitehall are comfortable in the tepid bath of managed decline.” Civil service unions were very upset by this. The government is still focused on transformation, though, and is determined to make sure that public institutions work for everyone.

What has the opposition said about the changes?

The Conservative Party has spoken out against the change. Mike Wood, their shadow cabinet office minister, said, “We believe in giving people a chance based on what they can do, not where they come from.” We all want working-class young people to have more chances to succeed. But this plan makes it clear that if you don’t fit a certain social profile, you aren’t welcome anymore. It is wrong to tell a young person they can’t come because of Marxist social engineering.

People are worried that this will leave out other talented people who don’t satisfy the requirements.
